A security organization came to us with an issue with their autonomous vehicles – they followed a header – follower design, where each vehicle in the convoy behind the header would match its actions. Under test circumstances this system worked correctly, but once deployed, unexpected sand conditions blinded and disabled their LiDAR sensors, causing their machine learning system to malfunction.

This organization had gathered sand testing data in a separate climate that did not effectively match the deployment conditions. Luckily, the defect was noticed early on, and the vehicles were recalled before any incidents occurred. We were contacted to see if synthetic data could fix the issue and ensure it didn’t happen again, as gathering effective training data in the deployment territory was impossible.

CVEDIA was able to recreate matching conditions using the little LiDAR sensor data they had recorded in deployment. Using this, a matching simulated environment was created where their machine learning team was able manipulate sand, dust, and weather conditions using the SynCity GUI and Python API. Being able to export extensive training data relating to this issue enabled the team to effectively train algorithms against all possibilities, allowing for a successfully validated vehicle system.
